Construction of a single storey temporary school building, consisting of classroom accommodation and related administrative accommodation, situated on the grounds of Merlin Park Regional Hospital, together with all ancillary site works at Merlin Park, Galway.
This proposed new St Anne’s School was intended for use ancillary to the Children and Adolescent Mental Health Services Inpatient Unit (CAMHS Inpatient Unit). All access to the school for staff and students is through the CAMHS Inpatient Unit. The site of the proposed temporary school remains under the ownership of the HSE, while leased to the DES.
Construction consisted of stub-pile foundations with suspended steel frame and a timber frame construction. Construction works a very high air-tightness record and finishes included all ancillary classroom fitted furniture. New connection works were required for independent connection and involved installation of services through the hospital campus to mains services.
External works included concrete paths, tarmac areas, softplay surfacing and ramps to meet disability access regulations. Special security fencing was installed to all site boundaries to match existing at CAMHS facility.
Galway Community College is located in on the Wellpark Road, Moneenageisha, Galway. The purpose of the works was to bring the existing College up to current Building Regulations.
Fire Safety Cert and Disability Access Cert works were undertaken for Galway Roscommon Education Training Board (GRETB)
Works included the construction and installation of two Part M-compliant lifts, internal alterations, additional escape routes, installation of fire systems & amended electrical installation, substantial fire-separation & upgrade works and all associated site development works; hydrant system installation and Part M parking at Galway Community College, Moneenageisha, Galway.
The works took place in an operational College which continued to operate for the duration of the construction works. Detailed planning and coordination with the client was be required to ensure that the safe and efficient operation of the College was maintained.
Alterations and refurbishment of existing training centre for the creation of 2 number electrical workshops.
Works were carried out in a live training environment which presented restrictions to noise, dust and movement within the site and access to and from the work area.
Works included the demolition of existing carpentry workshop, IT classroom and number of office units; construction of new partitions to perimeter of each workshop to create division for separation, fire and noise requirements; construction of 28 number working cubicles for apprentices to train; construction of teachers office with glazing to oversee students; store rooms complete with racking systems; full M&E fit-out to high standard to demonstrate good practice to students.
Construction of New Classroom Extension of circa 86 square metres, which included two WC’s, one of which is accessible. Works included identifying underground services in area of proposed building works and rerouting and connecting to services in the existing school. Foundations of existing building were underpinned. All drainage works required for new classroom including new soakway for surface water. Car park and school yard and emergency routes were tarmacadam surfaced and ground levels raised to suitable levels for disability access.
Works were programmed to minimize the disruption to the operation of the school and emergency egress adjacent to construction site was required to be kept clear during school hours.
Single storey extension to existing school to form new classroom, toilets and storage. Construction consisted of concrete raft, blockwork structure, steel roof structure with insulated metal sheeting to roof. Services were relocated to facilitate extension. A link between existing school and extension was provided by steel structured canopy with clear sheeting. A storage shed was constructed adjacent to extension. Retaining wall constructed to perimeter of extension consisting of cast in-situ reinforced concrete wall with stone work facing and handrail. Siteworks included new foul & surface drainage connecting to existing services. Work was carried out in a live working environment without causing interference or disruption to the school.
Works undertaken at the existing educational campus to meet current building regulations. Works included the construction of an extension to the training centre which included the construction of a passenger lift and the construction of a new stairs access.

The works involved the full removal of the existing roof covering, to the roof structural element, installations of new roof covering and installation of new guttering and fascia and soffit throughout.
Removal of existing asphalt layer, screed, cork and concrete block up-stand and removed to a licence facility. New roof construction consisting of new timber sub-frame to achieve required falls; Installation of new warm deck roof to include for all membranes plywood and fixings; Installation of new flashings to new roof to ensure the new roof is sealed and blended in seamlessly with existing building; Installation of new fascia and soffit; and installation of new guttering and downpipes
External site works upgrading to existing school yard together with development of new playing facilities comprising of a new synthetic playing pitch with sports fencing, new basketball court area, new tarmacadam surfacing to entrance and car parking facilities, new entrance area steps and fencing with all new ancillary siteworks and services as required.
Replacement of defective playground matting, fencing, decking together with construction of fixtures & fittings, paving & landscaping. Playsafe rubber surface was applied to playground areas including interactive shapes. New fencing of playground railings with twin-wire fencing to site boundary, new composite decking, fixtures & fittings included sand pit, mounded play tunnel, roofed decking area, benches & foundations for shed & poly-tunnel.
Construction of new educational facility including classrooms, administration offices, sluice rooms, toilets and locker rooms. The works were designed and constructed to match the existing surrounding landscape and buildings and included finishes such as natural stonework, natural slate and galvanised roofing. The works also included for the refurbishment of an existing residential block and conversion to a student accommodation.
